What is the origion of 'Blackmail'?
The word blackmail is derived from the word for 'mailing' paid by English and Scottish border dwellers in return for immunity from raids and other harassment. The 'mail' part of blackmail derives from Middle English male, 'rent, tribute'. Over time, it came to mean the extortion of money by threats, including threats to reveal secrets.
