What is the origion of 'Chance one's arm'?
The expression is believed to have originated from a dispute in 1492 involving two Irish families, taking on a different meaning from what it represents today. The conflict escalated into minor battles just outside of Dublin, with the Butlers seeking refuge in the Chapter House of Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. In an act of goodwill, Gerald FitzGerald, the patriarch of the FitzGerald clan, had a hole made in the door of the room where the Butlers were barricaded. He then extended his arm through the hole, offering his hand in peace.
