What is the origion of 'Cold shoulder'?
The earliest documented instance of the term dates back to 1816, when Sir Walter Scott used it in 'The Antiquary,' written in Scots. The term inaccurately translates the Latin 'dederunt umerum recedentem' found in Nehemiah 9:29 of the Vulgate Bible. Contrary to popular belief, which suggests the phrase originates from the practice of serving an unwelcome visitor a cold shoulder of meat, linguists have deemed this interpretation to be a misinformed folk etymology.
